Ingredients

Puff Pastries

10 sheets puff pastry, thawed (about 2 packages of frozen puff pastry, 17 oz each)

7 oz cream cheese

Zest of 1 orange

1 tablespoon granulated sugar

1 egg, beaten (for brushing)

Caramelized Prunes

1 cup Sunsweet prunes, quartered

2 tablespoons butter

3 tablespoons brown sugar (or cane sugar)

3 tablespoons orange juice

1 teaspoon vanilla extract (or vanilla sugar)

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions

Make the Orange Cream Cheese Filling
In a small bowl, mix cream cheese, orange zest, and sugar until smooth. Set aside.

Make the Caramelized Prunes

In a small saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.

Stir in the brown sugar until it starts to bubble and lightly caramelize.

Add quartered prunes and stir to coat.

Pour in the orange juice and simmer for 3–5 minutes, until the mixture thickens slightly and the prunes absorb the syrup.

Stir in vanilla and cinnamon (P.S. You can also add 1–2 tbsp of rum, amaretto, or cognac at the end for extra flavor.) Remove from heat and let cool.

Assemble and Bake the Tarts

Preheat oven according to puff pastry package instructions (typically 400°F)

Cut each puff pastry sheet in half to make rectangles.

Using a knife, score a shallow border about 1/2 inch from the edge on all sides.

Brush the edges with beaten egg.

Spoon a dollop of the orange cream cheese mixture into the center of each piece and spread gently.

Bake for 12–15 minutes, or until golden and puffed.

Let cool slightly, then spoon caramelized prunes on top.

Dust with powdered sugar before serving.
