Position:	Product Development/Food Technologist
Reporting To:	Director, Technical Services
Location:	Yuba City, CA
Description:	PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT / FOOD TECHNOLOGIST JOB PURPOSE Responsible for developing new products from an initial concept through production scale-up, adapting existing formulas and improvement of existing product processes according to project requirements and time line. Generates project and product development reports. Participates in the development of new product Food Safety/HACCP plan documentation. Uses nutritional labeling software to maintain formulas/recipes and generate ingredient statements and nutritional fact panels. Maintains current Technical and Production specifications. Maintains Quality Standards in the absence of regular supervisors. Assists in maintaining Quality programs, Technical information and crop data. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT Researches new concept ideas in coordination with superior and marketing Develops and creates proof of concept samples through bench-top formulations Conducts standard testing of formulations including chemical and sensory testing throughout the development process Meets with vendors and requests ingredients needed for projects from ingredient suppliers Coordinates outsourcing to development firms or lab as necessary Collects documentation and analysis of pilot production data Establishes scale-up procedures and processes Reviews shelf life studies Works with Purchasing and superior in approving new packaging Provides scale-up support to ensure successful transitions to product commercialization Maintains library of product concepts TECHNICAL SERVICES Creates and edits specifications and technical information Works on special projects to provide technical information Assists with quality system and food safety audits, and mock recalls Manages pesticide program by coordinating testing and records NUTRITION Sends products for nutritional analyses as necessary Maintains nutritional database of all products Creates and/or modifies nutritional labels in GENESIS as necessary Approves nutrition labels of all packaging QUALITY ASSURANCE Acts as supervisor in the absence of regular supervisors due to vacations or other unavailability (see job description for Quality Assurance Supervisor) PERSONAL GROWTH Demonstrates commitment to continued personal and professional growth and development Exercises tact and discretion in interpersonal contacts Respects confidentiality of privileged information
Requirements:	REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION: Education: Minimum Bachelor of Science degree (Food Science, Food Technology, or Food Chemistry). Experience: Minimum of 3 years experience in Food Technology, beverage development experience ideal Other Skills or certifications: • Strong project management skills • Handle deadlines in a flexible and positive manner • Problem solving skills • Ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment • Detail oriented • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • Must exercise good judgment and professionalism • Proficient in Word and Excel • Proficient with Automated Information System • Excellent analytical skills and ability to resolve quality issues Physical Demands: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential duties of this job. • Standing, walking, sitting, talking/listening, and reaching with hands and arms • Lifting up to 25 pounds. Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential duties of this job. • Manufacturing environment with moderate to loud noise and slippery walking surfaces • High speed automated production lines • Analytical Laboratories shared by multiple employees • Corrosive and explosive, strong acid and base analytical chemicals in the Laboratories • X-ray equipment in use on specific product lines
