CALIFORNIA'S TASTIEST GIFT

We have Louis Pellier to thank for bringing the delicious d’Agen Prune tree root all the way from France to California during the Gold Rush – a move that was truly priceless for our future.

1917

SUNSWEET IS FOUNDED

Sunsweet was founded as the California Prune and Apricot Grower Association, bringing farmers together to market their delicious fruit to the world. During that first year Sunsweet handled 43% of California’s crop and has since become the #1 prune brand in the world.

1932

PRUNE JUICE IS BORN

So flavorful and endlessly beneficial, Amaz!n Prune Juice, was an early innovation that introduced nature’s remedy for digestive health.

NO, PRUNE COUNTRY.

Have you heard the old adage “Too much fruit and nowhere to dry it”? Of course not, because the first dryer co-op emerged in Napa Valley in 1934. Sunsweet now has dryers throughout California to ensure that ripe, flavorful fruit is quickly dried into prunes.

A NEW SNACK ON THE SCENE

The very first tenderized and ready-to-eat prunes emerged this year – and we’ve been busy perfecting them ever since. What does tenderized mean? It’s how we make Sunsweet prunes soft, moist and juicy.

1958

MAKING IT OFFICIAL

Our name officially becomes Sunsweet Growers Inc. And though we’ve kept the name pretty constant since then, we changed our look quite a few times over the last 100 years. Take a look!

1965

THE SUNSWEET PITTED PRUNE MAKES ITS DEBUT

Creating a truly superior prune took some innovation. The proprietary pitting process created by Sunsweet in the 1960s results in a uniform fruit that is rounder, plumper and more flavorful, since it retains most of the tender inner fruit. It even reseals the fruit after pitting!

1975

THE YUBA CITY FACILITY OPENS

Our beloved Yuba City facility opens, later to become our worldwide headquarters, which now produces over 40,000 cases of Sunsweet products every day.

1991

GETTING OUT THERE

One of the biggest ad campaigns we ever created was launched in 1991, but we’ve been having fun with advertising for decades! Check out some of our favorite ads and insights over the last 100 years.

1994

THE BIGGEST IN THE WORLD

Our Yuba City processing plant has been expanded to 1.2 million square feet. From fruit storage to final packaging, it is the largest and most sophisticated plum-processing center in the world.

PERFECTION: IT’S A PROCESS

The path toward a prettier and tastier prune found us developing our patented Uniform Drying Process, raising the bar – again! – for a better product.

HELLO, ONES!

More than one billion individually wrapped Ones have been enjoyed since their launch in 2006 — and counting.

2010

AUTOMATED AND AWESOME

The installation of a computer-controlled Smart-Pitting System means we can keep producing high quality fruit – without those pesky pits – at an even more efficient pace. Win, win!
